AFL Round 4: Betting Preview and Tips

AFL Round 4 features some key games and gets underway on Thursday night with a clash between the Sydney Swans and Melbourne Demons.

A Western Derby between West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers is one of five Saturday games.

We preview each of the nine games below:

Sydney Swans v Melbourne Demons

Thursday, April 11

The Swans head in as slight favourites in the head to head betting on the back of the home ground advantage but the SCG hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the locals in the last season or so. Sydney will look to exploit Melbourne’s leaky backline that have conceded an average of 114 points per game so far this year. Lance Franklin, Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley should be dangerous in front of goal, while further up the ground, Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker will look to supply the Swans forwards. Kennedy and Parker take on the likes of Angus Brayshaw, Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver in the middle of the ground and the battle here will be decisive, given the small dimensions of the SCG.

Prediction: Demons win ($2.16 TopBetta)

Collingwood v Western Bulldogs

Friday, April 12

Collingwood have won just one of their three games this season and desperately need a win to get back on track.  This game pits a couple of the competition’s better midfields up against one another. However, the Magpies look to have more firepower in their forward line with Jordan de Goey and a host of other options in fine form. At the other end, the Dogs will need to convert a bit better that they dis last week after managing just nine goals from 66 inside 50’s.

Prediction: Collingwood by 1-39 ($2.20 TopBetta)

Geelong Cats v GWS Giants

Saturday, April 13

Geelong have set the pace in the early stages of the 2019 home and away season and sit on top of the AFL ladder, unbeaten with three wins. GWS have won two of three. Their clash against Geelong could be a bit of a sneak peak towards this year’s finals series. The Cats defence has also been super tight. They have conceded an average of just 62 points per game this season. GWS might battle to kick the winning score and it will be interesting to see if Jeremy Cameron can get the supply that saw him boot seven against Richmond last weekend.

Prediction: Geelong -15.5 ($1.80 TopBetta)

Essendon Bombers v Brisbane Lions

Saturday, April 13

Brisbane, who have won three in a row for the first time since 2010, have a number of match winners around the ground. Lachie Neale leads the competition for disposals after the first three weeks, while Eric Hipwood comes off a six goal haul. Josh Walker and Luke Hodge have been keys down back and if they can take their form down to Marvel they should be hard to beat.

Prediction: Lions win ($2.06 TopBetta)

Port Adelaide v Richmond Tigers

Saturday, April 13

Port Adelaide ran out of steam in Round 3 against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba for a first loss for the season after two wins to begin 2019. The 2017 AFL Premiers Richmond currently sit 14th after two-straight losses and the list of outs continues to grow through injury and suspension. Port Adelaide have won two of the past three against Richmond at the Adelaide Oval. They should have too much firepower for the Tigers who are missing five key players.

Prediction: Port Adelaide -25.5 ($1.93 TopBetta)

North Melbourne v Adelaide Crows

Saturday, April 13

Both sides are under the pump in the early stages of the 2019 home and away season. North Melbourne are winless after three games and Adelaide have won just one of three. North Melbourne will find plenty of footy in the middle of the ground but their lack of goalscoring options up forward are a cause for concern. If the Roos are to win, Ben Brown will need to kick a bag, while Jack Ziebell, Kayne Turner and Shaun Higgins are among others that will need to chime in.

Prediction: Crows win ($1.64 TopBetta)

West Coast Eagles v Fremantle Dockers

Saturday, April 13

The reigning premiers, the West Coast Eagles, have started to hit top gear after three rounds with two consecutive victories over GWS Giants and Collingwood. Expect this match to have a fair bit of heat following their last meeting. It wasn’t the 58-point smashing by the Eagles that will be remembered. Andrew Gaff threw away his chance at playing in the 2018 final series, and subsequently a premiership, when he had a brain fade and was dealt an eight-week suspension for striking Andrew Brayshaw. Once the physicality between the two sides wears off, expect the superior Eagles outfit to take advantage of the game. A seven-match winning streak in favour of the Eagles is also a telling stat heading into the Derby clash.

Prediction: Eagles -36.5 ($1.90 TopBetta)

Gold Coast Suns v Carlton

Sunday, April 14

The Gold Coast Suns narrowly defeated Fremantle in Round 2 and capitalised on that momentum with an upset victory over the Western Bulldogs. Carlton are 0-3 and desperate for a win. Not too many would have predicted the Suns to be 2-1 after three rounds and they could make it three wins.

Prediction: Suns by 1-39 ($2.10 TopBetta)

St Kilda v Hawthorn

Sunday, April 14

Both sides have won two of their three games this season. St Kilda were victorious against the Gold Coast and Essendon before sustaining a five point loss to Fremantle in round three. Hawthorn have registered victories against Adelaide and North Melbourne. Those wins were split by a 19 point loss to the Western Bulldogs in round two. St Kilda have made a competitive start to the year but Hawthorn have an edge in class and should have the answers.

Prediction: Hawks by 1-39 ($2.10 TopBetta)
