Australia claimed a dramatic last wicket win in the 1st T2o on Sunday and can now seal the series in the second and final game to Bengaluru on Wednesday.
A last-ball three-wicket win in the first T20I in Vishakhapatnam gave Australia a perfect start to their Indian tour as they bounced back from losing the ODI and Test series Down Under.
Head to Head
India have won 11 of the 19 T20Is played against Australia, losing just seven. The two sides drew a three-match series Down Under at the end of 2018 after one game was washed out.
India have won 13 of their last 18 T20Is home and away
The defeat in the first game of the series was their only loss in the last eight home T20Is (W7, L1).
India have won their last two T20Is at this venue.
Australia have lost four of their last six T20Is away from home.
Australia have lost five of the nine T20Is they played in India.
However, they have won four of their last six T20Is played in India.
KL Rahul’s knock at the top (50 off 36 balls) in the first match would have been a welcome sign for India. Virat Kohli (24 off 17) teased on his comeback, but overall it was their batting failure that cost the hosts.
Had it not been for the bowlers, taking the chase of 127 to the final ball wouldn’t have been possible. Jasprit Bumrah (3/16) showed that he is head and shoulders above his peers when it comes to death bowling. But the lack of an all-rounder meant that India were always behind the eight ball.
Australia had no such problems, at least with the ball. Nathan Coulter-Nile (3/26) was brilliant with his spell, while Pat Cummins (1/19) and Jason Benrendorff (1/16) stifled the runs. A small target meant the Kangaroos were always the front runners for the win.
Glenn Maxwell (56 off 43) and D’Arcy Short (37 off 37) took on the Indian bowlers, but what looked like an easy win got stretched to the last over. A calm knock from Cummins towards the end, in the company of Jhye Richardson took them over the line.
Australia have the right balance thanks to the array of batting all-rounders they have at their disposal. India might experiment further without worrying about the series result, but should eye another fighting display.
