Midweek Best Bets

The spring racing steps up a notch at the weekend with the return of Group 1s with the Winx Stakes at Randwick.

Before then, however, we have the chance to boost the betting balance with some value bets for Wednesday’s metro racing at Canterbury and Sandown.

Check out our best bets below:

Canterbury Park

Race 4

Race 4 at Canterbury shapes as an interesting one with a couple of likely types resuming including Subpoenaed. However, the one to back might be the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained SANGITA ($4.60 TopBetta), who resumed with a strong win off a long break at Wyong on August 2. In that race, the four-year-old took over at the top of the straight and the form out of that has held up with two horses going on to win since that outing. At her last preparation she wasn’t far away in a couple of handy races and had excuses when not measuring up to Group 2 company in the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m). She should take benefit out of the first up run and is a danger to the favoured runners.

Race 5

DON’T LEAVE ME OUT ($4.60 TopBetta) should find this a lot easier than his last start assignment that saw him run 5th behind Taniko at Randwick in a Saturday race. The Jo Pride-trained galloper was first up in the July 20 affair over the 1000m and couldn’t quite go with the leading bunch but stuck on well to finish just over three lengths from the winner. He has since won a trial by a massive margin but a better pointer to his form is that he was a second up winner at this track and distance at his last campaign, clearing out with the handy Tonsor, while there was a big gap back to 3rd. He has drawn in a slightly awkward spot but with any luck in running he should be a factor at the business end.

Sandown

Race 7

Race 7 at Sandown is a BenchMark 70 over the 1400m journey and the promising TOO GOOD TOO HARD ($2.40 TopBetta) can go very close to taking this out. The Phillip Stokes-trained galloper has had just the two starts for a win at Sale back in May before missing out in a head bobber at this track over 1000m on July 24. In that race, the daughter of All Too Hard rattled home from worse than midfield. She will slot into a nice spot from barrier 2 with Luke Nolen on board and can again launch at them. The step up to the 1400m should suit and the promising galloper can go on with it.

Race 8

We finish off with what looks to be a nice race and the clear top pick is TOFANE ($2.20 TopBetta), who resumes for the Michael Moroney stable. The four-year-old mare has had just the four career starts and resumed with a big win at Ballarat last time before being luckless at Caulfield when 5th to Graceful Storm. She had one more start, finishing a narrow runner-up at Group 2 level in the Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. That form should be good enough for this. With Damien Oliver on board, she can close the day out in style.
