Sandown and Warwick Farm provide us with the midweek metro action this week.
There are some standout value chances to be backing in both Melbourne and Sydney and we’ve lined up the best bets for each venue.
Race 5 at Sandown is a BenchMark 70 and it is JUMBO OZAKI ($2.10 TopBetta) that should be an improver. The promising galloper was tried in a Saturday race at Flemington when resuming on August 10 and lined up an easing $3.80 chance before racing accordingly. On that occasion, the Philip Stokes-trained galloper settled just off the speed and loomed up at the 200m mark but couldn’t go with Ruban Bleu, who was powerful to the line. He should improve from that outing and at his initial campaign he won two of three before being sent for a spell. John Allen retains the ride and if he can find a spot from the wide gate then his mount can bounce back.
This looks to be a nice race for LAINGERA ($2.90 TopBetta) to kick off his campaign. The Godolphin galloper returns after an eight week break and took out a 900m scamper at Newcastle in dominant fashion at his last start. In the autumn he was placed at Group 3 level behind Loving Gaby in the Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield before missing out in a couple of Listed races at Flemington behind Microphone and Mockery. A firmer in early betting, he was given a soft time of it in a recent trial when running 4th at Warwick Farm and looks well placed to get off to a flyer here.
We close off with a BenchMark 70 over the 1400m at Warwick Farm and the one to beat is LIFETIME QUEST ($3.00 TopBetta). The Kris Lees-trained galloper has had eight career starts and has won or placed in all of those. The four-year-old broke a a bit of a sequence of minor placings at his latest outing when leading all the way to take out a BM72 at this track and trip ahead of King Hewit and Cuba when leading all the way. Prior to that he missed out behind Misteed and True Detective in what has proven to be a solid form race. He has been kept in similar grade in his quest to go back to back and should be able to handle any conditions that the track may throw up. Stick with him.
