Midweek Best Bets

Blue Sapphire Stakes day is a hidden gem in the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Sandwiched in the middle of the Caulfield Cup Carnival, Wednesday’s meeting provides hopeful runners and connections an opportunity into the Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

Caulfield

Race 1: A deep race in which most runners come to Caulfield in good form and recent wins open the card. Shared Ambition has been unbeaten since his debut, looks a natural stayer even though he has only had four starts. Was superb in Australian debut and will be better for that run. One to beat ($2.45 Playup). Egyptian Gold has won both of his starts beyond the mile so far, beat Naivasha who ran well in Cranbourne Cup. Coming up in opposition is query. Spanish Point comes up in class here after a comfortable win in Geelong last time out. Worth keeping in thoughts.

Race 2: Double You Tee has won last two and has been all class in doing so, four weeks between races but that shouldn’t be an issue. Bass is looking for a win this prep after two seconds to open the prep, hasn’t won in Australia but will fly late and is worth the value here ($5.00 Playup). Tavistock Dancer has been relying too heavily on the pattern of the race to get close, needs pace in it or he is too far back.

Race 3: Yulong Prince was solid in the Underwood next to The Chosen One who went on to win the Herbert Power, Humidor and Harlem were also in that group and they had great runs in the Caulfield Stakes. If that form holds up here he will be hard to beat. Good price too ($6.00 Playup). Wolfe will be right in the mix but faces a tough test coming down from the 2500m in the Bart Cummins. Blinkers on should help him out in front. Oceanex missed last start but the jockey has accepted responsibility for that result, worth keeping the faith with here and can go again. Spanish Steps is overs here, will like the 2000m and will be fitter for last run, worth consideration.

Race 4: Serious Liaison is lightly raced but has shown glimpses, he had no luck last start so you can forget that. Win in Bendigo was class. Royalty will enjoy the mile here, was good but found trouble in Bendigo last start. Showed heart to finish off strong though. Could be decent value ($5.00 Playup).

Race 5: Bravo Tango showed his true colours second up! Draw will mean he may ride for luck but he can beat these. Usain Bowler has the class to win here but hasn’t showed much of that class lately. Missed twice at this trip but can be excused both times, can we trust again? Columbia was good at this grade previously and can improve here, always gives himself a chance to figure. Amadeus is peaking for this 3rd up and will improve on the beginning of this prep. Loves the 1400m and gives punters great value ($4.40 Playup).

Race 6: Zoustyle is the bet of the day ($2.40 Playup), led superbly here last time before being pipped on the line. Won’t face as much pressure up top as last start and should be able to dictate the tempo. Haunted always gives his all and is never too far away, deserves to be considered. Order of Command carried a big weight first up and will be fitter for that run, always improves second up and that record is hard to look past.

Race 7: Dubious can perhaps be excused for his fresh run, the jockey said he didn’t handle the soft track at all well. Was great in the Dunhill and that form has stacked up terrifically. Well worth his price ($5.50 Playup). Exhilarates has been in winning form this campaign and only just missed out on the hattrick last start. Draw is a big plus. Brooklyn Hustle is second up here and will be much better this time around, flew home first days fastest 200m first up. Can beat these.

Race 8: Fidelia at her best should be too good for these, she will love the mile and ran the fastest final 600m and 400m of the day last time out. Has all the class and is a must get on ($2.90 Playup). Rondinella provides the biggest threat, the mile is a query but if she can handle it she is every chance. Will be peaking for this 3rd up though.
