Midweek Best Bets

With the Melbourne Cup Carnival wrapping up for 2019, many people will be of the mind that the racing just stops now, but that isn’t the case. For many punters the game just rolls on, and this week we find our mid-week racing takes us to Bendigo in country Victoria.

Race 1: Abraxos has been looking good in his jump-outs ahead of his resumption. Didn’t manage a place in any of four starts previous but was just missing them. Will need watching. Miss Elena was strong when resuming and will strip fitter here, will prove very hard to beat and should be the one to beat. Worth following ($2.20 Playup). Oh Cecilia showed plenty of promise on debut but hasn’t fulfilled that potential yet, third campaign now and may be smarter for the first two preps.

Race 2: Nerone has had a big first campaign, five previous starts. Ran second to Banquo who won impressively at Flemington on Saturday to frank that form, should prove too good for these if that form holds up. Get on ($1.85 Playup). Laybuy also ran in that Banquo race finishing third, will prove the obvious danger if that form does hold up. Will be fitter here and can improve. Whykayoh will eat the 1300m as he jump-out suggests, his carrier keeps him the chances.

Race 3: Our August Rose debuted in strong fashion at Mornington, had no luck when being squashed against the fence but fought hard all the way. Early speed may be her best attribute here, follow her ($4.20 Playup). Jealice hit the line well when fresh, will eat the extra distance here. Expect improvement due to her stripping fitter here. Dondeska will be peaking here after her first two runs, was quite unlucky to miss out the previous start and can improve again. If she takes the step, look out.

Race 4: Quantam Mechanic will prove very hard to beat here, ran well in G2 at Mooney Valley last start. Form out of that has been solid too. Get on this ($1.75 Playup). Chilula looms as the danger after a strong second-up run, will strip fitter here and improvement will see her in this. Has run a good mile behind Fidelia and Sure Knee previously! Bellevita had a good resumption, will be better for the run there. The 1600m will suit.

Race 5: Prince of Caviar is the obvious watch in this race, the son of champion Black Caviar will make his long-awaited return after 59 weeks away from the races. The form surrounding his last prep is class, his first run he just missed to soon-to-be G1 winner Extra Brut. After that Mickey Blue Eyes just pipped him who went on to win the Dulcify next. The only query is the 1100m but is worth the flutter ($2.50 Playup). Sagarra was good when fresh, does like it here and proves the biggest danger. Mumbles is good enough but will come here fresh.

Race 6: Living the Dream has been nicely prepared for the mile here, beaten by a smart one at Geelong, that winner went on and was very good at Flemington on Saturday. Follow that form ($2.30 Playup). Sign of Ussuri will not be helped by the barrier, is good enough to win this but will need to take the scenic route you would think. Aussie Nugget won at the mile last start and deserves respect, best is good enough.

Race 7: Super Girl was very good in Bendigo Cup, finished midfield there and was unlucky to miss start before that. Looks a class above these and should prove too good ($3.60 Playup). Cracksman comes here fitter after carrying heaps of weight over 2100m 3rd up, looks the nearest rival. Hutchinson was great when breaking maiden last time, comes up in class but has arguably the most upside.

Race 8: Sir Kalahad will be benefited by his early speed, not many will challenge him up front here and that may allow him to dictate speed and cruise home. Worth following at the value ($26.00 Playup). Vellastar carried big weight last time and was good, will be much fitter for that and can win this. Lianne finished strong to score first-up and will only be fitter for that run. Any improvement has her right in the finish. Mickie Blue Eyes wasn’t superb last start but wasn’t disgraced as last place may suggest, comes down in class and will surely improve, will loom as danger.
