Perth Scorchers have failed to make the BBL playoffs for the first time but they can provide a blow to the top-four-chasing Melbourne Stars at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
The Scorchers (W3, L9) have only one thing left to play for – to avoid the wooden spoon. For the Stars (W6, L5), eyes are firmly on making the playoffs and they will look to leave with a seventh win of the season in the bag.
Head to Head
The Scorchers claimed one of their three wins this season against the Stars when winning by six wickets at the MCG. They now edge the overall head to head record 7-6. This will be the first meeting at the Scorchers’ new home Optus Stadium, but it was 5-3 in Perth’s favour at the WACA before the move.
Scorchers have won the last three matches against the Stars.
Scorchers have won five of the eight matches against the Stars in Perth, although it was at the WACA.
The home side has won seven of the last ten matches between the Scorchers and the Stars.
Batting collapses have been the problem for the Scorchers throughout BBL season, and the latest loss to Brisbane Heat means they have now lost their last four matches.
Cameron Bancroft (232 runs) and Ashton Turner (309 runs) remaining their lone shining points with the bat and unusually the bowling unit has struggled too, with Andrew Tye’s 14 wickets coming a bit too late in the day.
It has been a dream comeback by the Stars, after starting the season below-par. They have won four of their last five matches, including the last three in a row to move into the playoff picture. With this being their game in hand, they will look to move up the table.
The all-round skills of Marcus Stoinis (312 runs) has been a huge bonus for the Stars, who have struggled for runs otherwise. With the ball too, Stoinis (14 wickets) and Dwayne Bravo (14 wickets) lead their charts.
Confidence is running high in the Stars’ camp about their chances of making to the finals, and there looks enough in the tank to brush aside the hosts and pick up a crucial win.
