Weekend Best Bets

This weekend’s racing is filled with excitement. Saturday is the delicious treat sandwiched in the middle of an action-packed three days of racing.

Rosehill and Mornington host respective meetings, with Rosehill boasting the Group 1 Golden Rose.

Rosehill

Race 5: Small fields are the pattern of the day early at Rosehill and this is no exception, the field of seven will be most likely led out by Fundamentalist who is struggling to find her best this campaign. Her best is good enough but can she find it? Dyslexic will be peaking now but worried she will wait for luck more so than making her own, can’t discount though. Mizzy will also be on the pace and has been excellent this prep, love her value ($6.50 TopBetta). Champagne Cuddles is good second up, left too much to do when fresh last start.

Race 6: Plenty of chances here, Chris Waller-trained Dabiyr stands out as the major chance. Goes up in class here but form suggests that won’t be an issue. Gayatri is Waller’s other hopeful, dry form is solid and last win was stellar, great value at $4.60 on TopBetta. Stampede has staying ability in spades, run down late last start by the now Melbourne Cup favourite and showed plenty. Scarlet Dream has made some steep climbs in trip this prep (1200m-1500m-2000m) but has handled them quite well, still a query over the strategy but is running great.

Race 7: The main event of the meeting comes in the form of the De Bortoli Golden Rose. Another small field will most likely see Yao Dash lead them out, has great tempo from the front and is unbeaten so far. History says as a gelding he will struggle to win (two wins in 14 years). Castelvecchio will look to swoop late, field size doesn’t do any favours but provides excellent value ($11 TopBetta). Bivouac likes it here and was great last start, struggled behind Exceedance before that but heavy track played against that day.

Race 8: 10 years on from the dominant win in this race of So You Think, two of the champions own will be attempting to follow in their father’s footsteps. Just Thinkin’ will take up the early running and so far has shown nothing that 1800m will be a worry. Quick Thinker will be biding time waiting to swoop late, has looked a class above and also won’t mind the distance. 1 from 1 second up. If you’re looking to stray from them and find value, there’s plenty in Subedar. Has run behind the above mentioned in his last two and if you trust that form then he provides a great quinella/each-way option ($5.50 TopBetta).

Race 9: Seemingly outrageous value on offer here in the way of Turnberry, always good fresh and has trialled well. Well worth an each-way look ($17 TopBetta). Amangiri will be looking for longer but is sharp enough to figure here, her last campaign was stellar.

Mornington

Race 6: Jumbo Ozaki should be primed for this run, first two have been good but needs to take next step and find the line first here. Barrier a worry. Each Way value sits with El Phoenix ($11 TopBetta) who comes up in class but will take the lead. Will give the chasing pack work to do! Jenkins never lets the connections down and deserves trust, trialled well and has the class.

Race 7: Naval Warfare will be there or thereabouts when it matters, has shown willingness to work to the line. Another Coldie deserves all the forgiveness in the world for last start, won at Caulfield before that and is right in this ($8.50 TopBetta). Douglas Macarthur is craving the 2400m and will be right in the finish here, has built nicely towards this and should continue to improve.

Race 8: Impi cantered last start in Echuca winning by 6L, has been rested since. 1200m raises some queries but he just may be up for it. Seberate will provide a sneaky bit of value here ($7 TopBetta), first up last prep was terrific and deserves faith. I’m Telling Ya deserves a win more than most, runs hard every time and gives his all. Home track would be the perfect place to break the drought.
