Tattersall’s Tiara Day provides us with the last Group 1 of the season at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
As well as Eagle Farm’s program, Flemington and Randwick provide us with plenty of punting opportunities for the weekend.
We pick out the best bets for Saturday:
Race 8 – Tattersall’s Tiara
The feature of the weekend is the Tatts Tiara for the fillies and mares and PRINCESS POSH ($18 TopBetta) gets her chance to break through at the highest level. The Kris Lees-trained galloper has placed twice in Group 1 races this preparation. She worked home very nicely to finish runner-up behind The Bostonian at her last start, which was in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) and earlier on she was an excellent 3rd in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) behind Dixie Blossoms. Those runs were punctuated by some luckless efforts in Sydney. She will get back from the gate but there looks to be a stack of pace ahead of her. That will play into her ability to run some slick sectionals later on. She represents value.
The value in the race looks to be the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained AZURO ($7.50 TopBetta). He was $61 into $41 last start in the Andrew Ramsden (2800m) and had the blinkers on for the first time. He didn’t really settle in the run and wanted to get on heels coming around the first bend, Jye McNeil elected to take off around the 1300m and he was forced to loop the field and make a long sustained run off a strong tempo. I thought his effort to hit the front at the top of the straight and still battle on to finish sixth, beaten 4.7 lengths behind Steel Prince and Surprise Baby was outstanding. The drop back from 2800m to 2500m gives me hope that he will settle better in the blinkers and he drops 4.5kg which must count for something in a staying race. He looks the play in the race.
The Bjorn Baker-trained CONNEMARA ($7.00 TopBetta) went into the blackbook last start and is a horse I’m keen to attack second-up. Her first-up performance over 1200m on a Heavy track was her best ratings performance to date, and she looks to have come back in great order. Barrier 12 is tricky, but with a bit of luck, she’ll be finishing hard at nice odds.
