The Group 2 Expressway Stakes is the feature race of a weekend featuring big race action at both Rosehill and Sydney.
Some big names make their returns to the track for an autumn preparation in both Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday.
We pick out the best bets for weekend.
McLAREN ($1.76 ClassicBet) is a Golden Slipper horse in the making. The Exceed And Excel colt has been ultra-impressive in both barrier trials to date including a last start effort where he put seven lengths on his opposition in effortless fashion. It will take an extremely gifted galloper to be beating him on Saturday.
The Group 2 Expressway Stakes has attracted a small field of six but they are genuine Group 1 horses. Hartnell, Trapeze Artist, Le Romain and ALIZEE ($1.91 ClassicBet) have 12 Group 1 wins between them while Lanciato and Dothraki make up the remainder of the field. Who will need the run and who is set for a big effort? Alizee looks to have come back in sensational order and she can go to a new level this campaign. The mare has such a powerful turn of foot, she can mow them down with 2kg less.
This is no easy task for the unbeaten GIRL TUESDAY ($2.51 TopBetta), but she impressed in a recent barrier trial and the Waller stable would be keen to keep her unblemished record intact. She raced through the grades in her first preparation winning all four starts, and arguably her most impressive performance was when third-up at this track and distance where she won by 3.5 lengths. Two barrier trials have her prepped for this and she should be charging home in the straight.
LOVING GABY ($5.26 TopBetta) is a duel acceptor but if she goes to Caulfield she should be winning this. She caught the eye at the Pakenham trials two weeks ago, cruising to victory under a strong hold. Looking at her rivals, Art Collection and Lanigera both come out of a Flemington jumpout and should run well, but the main danger looks to be the stablemate Bella Rosa. She ran well on debut down the straight in that crazy storm on Cup Day. The second horse Lankan Star has since won impressively at The Valley defeating Hulk.
Looking at the fit horses, we see POISED TO STRIKE ($4.61 ClassicBet) and Tin Hat at the top of the market. Craig Williams has ridden Tin Hat his last two but jumps off to ride Poised To Strike, that seems like a decent lead to me. Poised To Strike was first-up for 22 weeks last start and won and should only improve second up. After that effort, Williams thinks he is the one to be on.
